The APRIL lab is led by Prof. Edwin Olson, and conducts research into autonomous robotics, including perception, planning, and learning. It is part of the AI Lab, part of the CSE division of the EECS department at the University of Michigan.
Our goal is to build systems capable of operating for long periods of time in unfamiliar areas, interacting naturally with humans. This requires the development of systems for robust environment modeling and mapping (and the perceptual systems behind them), motion planning, and human-robot interaction. Each of these components can benefit from machine learning, whether we are learning perceptual models of objects or learning behavior preferences through observation.
If you are interested in working in the APRIL Laboratory and are already admitted to the CSE division, you can contact Prof. Olson at ebolson@umich.edu to make an appointment. If you have not yet been admitted to the University of Michigan graduate program, your first step is to apply.
